Facing Beyond Mount Kenya: An introduction of Joseph C. Kihiu's latest book

FACING BEYOND MOUNT KENYA

The Agikuyu traditional religion and its accompanying rituals promise God’s favor and a blessed life to people through periodic strange sacrifices, appeasing of the spirits of the dead, and the worship of a tribal god. It contradicts the Holy Scriptures in the fundamental doctrines of God and his purpose for humanity. It craftily creates access to God that is strange to the one way revealed in the Scriptures. Interestingly, this way and form of worship is exclusive to just the Agikuyu community, locking out all the communities in the world. And all this is built upon an unbiblical belief concerning the origin of the tribe.

The beliefs, traditions and rituals of the Agikuyu religion fail miserably under the scrutiny of God’s true revelation in the Holy Scriptures and in Christ Jesus. And hopefully, you shall see all this from God’s word and happily let your heart settle on the only place and truth that can give your soul eternal life and fulfilment: In Christ Jesus.

Just like it was in the times of Prophet Elijah’s controversy with the Baal worship, we are in our own Mt. Carmel decision point as believers from the Agikuyu community. We must decide now which God we shall serve. We cannot continue being torn between two opinions. If there is a god in Kirinyaga (Mount Kenya), let’s worship him. But if the true God is in heaven and has revealed Himself through His son Jesus Christ, let’s devote ourselves to Him. And only Him!

So you said you have no reasons to Sing about?

A word in season devotionals

Prince Joseph

Psalm 18:1-2
New International Version
[For the director of music. Of David the servant of the Lord. He sang to the Lord the words of this song when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. He said:]
I love you, Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

King David sang the words of this song after he went through a period of being pursued on every side by enemies and still he prevailed. How did he prevail? Who was worthy of the final praise? He tells us who: "The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;....."

You and I have had some battles too, if not many. We have come out of them and we are here today. so what should we do when we look back? We should firts reflect about how we made it and to whom belongs the glory and the praise. is it God or is it our might. it is certainly God.

So what should we do with this information? We should sing! Sing from our hearts and with all with have. Sing and let every one know how we actually made it. So, amidst all the battles of today and tomorrow, we can afford a song to the God who delivered us yesterday and yesteryears. Can't we?

"How can I repay the LORD for all his acts of kindness to me? I will celebrate my deliverance, and call on the name of the LORD." Psalms 116:12-13.

"The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold."

Yes! We shall sing

A word in season devotionals

Prince Joseph

Psalms 138:4-8
All the kings of the earth shall praise You, O Lord,
When they hear the words of Your mouth.
Yes, they shall sing of the ways of the Lord,
For great is the glory of the Lord.
Though the Lord is on high,
Yet He regards the lowly;
But the proud He knows from afar.
Though I walk in the midst of trouble, You will revive me;
You will stretch out Your hand
Against the wrath of my enemies,
And Your right hand will save me.
The Lord will perfect that which concerns me

Haven’t you ever come to the place where whatever God had been doing in the background of your life became visible and plain to you and you could not help but sing? Sing of His perfect wisdom in dealing with your life’s issues. Sing of His sovereign rule upon all aspects of your life. Sing of His grace extended to you even when you thought He was messing up with your life. Sing of His patience in dealing with you through it all despite your complains and unbelief. “Yes, they shall sing of the ways of the Lord.”

It is our limited understanding of the ways of the Lord God that give us much untold tension and stress and that gets in the way of faith.

Great is the glory of God. All His doings in our lives, sweet and painful, have one great and marvelous goal: Revealing the great glory of God. Be patient. You shall still sing when all is said and done. Yes, you shall sing of the ways of the Lord. It is our limited understanding of the ways of the Lord God that give us much untold tension and stress and that gets in the way of faith. This limits our full trust in the Lord and His ways.

Prayer:
Oh Lord. Your ways are above my ways. Your thoughts are above my thoughts. Your plans are above and better than my plans. Help me to trust and wait patiently through it all because at the end of it all Your great glory shall be revealed and oh how I shall sing from the depth of my heart.
Help me to trust you in the process and forgive me for all the times I have not co-operated with you. In Jesus mighty name I ask. Amen

Get into the game..

No nation, society or church has ever advanced beyond the levels of the their youth's involvement, capacity and enthusiasm. Every young person must find his/her niche and thrive to the uttermost in it, whichever context that maybe.

Employment is just one of the many niche we can thrive in but it's not the ONLY one. As youths we have been endowed with diverse gifts. This is why just one formal field of training isn't going to cut it. What about the skills-based and entrepreneural ventures? Music, agribusiness, art and design, supply, writing, ...

"If you are looking for sun, there is only ONE. But If you are looking for sources of light, THEY ARE COUNTLESS!"

Youths, let's shake off the discouragement from missed opportunities and seek to grow new wings to fly. We have abilities to innovate and create. The employment ventures we are fainting as we rush for them once didn't exist. Some people had to believe in their viability and risk to venture out. Get into the game. Opportunities are all over in your environment, you just have to broaden your preferences. If you are looking for sun, there is only ONE. But If you are looking for sources of light, THEY ARE COUNTLESS!

THE POWER OF YOUTH

There is a great potential in young people. It is like dynamite. Dynamite can do great good when used in the right way. It can pave the way for new buildings, schools, lakes, highways, and numerous other projects which will benefit mankind. In the wrong hands, though, it can be used to take life, often thousands of lives. Young people have the same potential for good or bad.
Adolph Hitler understood the power of young people. After he came to power in Germany in 1932 one of the early actions he took was to outlaw all youth groups, especially the religious ones. In their place he formed the Hitler Youth and the German League of Young Girls. In these organizations young people were taught to revere Hitler and serve him without question. The boys were taught that it would be an honor to lay down their lives for Fatherland and Fuhrer. The girls were taught that it was their duty to bear children and obey the Fuhrer. The youth of Germany were taught that they were the master race and it was their destiny to dominate the world. What happened as a result of Hitler harnessing the power of youth? A significant portion of this generation of German youth committed horrible atrocities in the name of their Fuhrer. In fact, Hitler did such a good job indoctrinating a generation that it was a detachment of Hitler Youth who died in the final battle for Berlin in 1945.
We shouldn't under estimate the strength of youth in the church, either. Why is there such strength in our youth?

1. They are idealistic. There are worlds to conquer, battles to win, deeds to be done. They have not yet learned what can't be done. They have not become jaded by life's heartbreaks and defeats. And because they don't know what can't be done, they often achieve great things.

2. They have boundless energy.

They seem to never tire in whatever work they passionately believe in. They don't tire like the rest of us who have done enough that we often feel like we need a rest.

3. They approach many things with a clean slate.

They don't have many of the old prejudices that we older adults have. This is why there is often less of a problem with racial bigotry among the young than among the old.
But with these things there are some dangers. Young people are sometimes naive. They do not have the value of experience. They often give into the siren call of temptation that the old have faced. And, the young are less likely to listen to older people who warn about mistakes because they are so idealistic.
To both young and old in the church let me make a few suggestions:

Older Christian, don't seek to destroy the zeal and idealism of the young. The church needs their zeal and fire for the Lord. We need their energy. Try to refrain from constantly telling them, "We've tried it before, and it didn't work then!" Do not seek to discourage young brethren. "Let no one despise your youth..." (1 Timothy 4:12).
Young Christian, you need to respect those who are older, especially those who are your brothers and sister in the body of Christ (1 Peter 5:1-2). They have been through life and really do know more than you. Seek out their wisdom and weigh carefully their warnings. If they are seeking to do the Lord's will they are due honor. "The silver-haired head is a crown of glory, If it is found in the way of righteousness" (Proverbs 16:31).

Young Christian, stand in the Word of God. Do not be carried away with something, just because it is different. "Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you" (1 Timothy 4:16).

Finally, young Christian, be an example to the rest of the body. Older brethren are watching you. What example will you set? "Be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity" (1 Timothy 4:12). Nothing will cause older Christians to lose respect for you quicker than to not live your life as a child of God.
